False Creek is an inlet located in the center of Vancouver City, BC. The creek divides the downtown core from the Lower Mainland and the rest of the city. The creek got its name from George Henry Richards who was doing Hydrographic survey of the area in 1856 to 1863. There are some bridges that span False Creek like for instance Cambie Street and Granville Street Bridges and the Burrard Street Bridge. The Burrard Street Bridge crosses the western end and Science World is located at the eastern end.
Together with the Burrard Inlet, the Fraser River and the English Bay, False Creek is amongst the 4 main bodies of water which border the city of Vancouver. The place has become somewhat popular for boating and various other water activities like for instance canoeing, public ferries, kayaking, dragon boating, visiting pleasure boats and charter ships. False Creek has 10 different marinas with berths to be able to accommodate 1500 watercraft and some boat rental facilities and paddling clubs. The Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival and various other paddling events have been situated at this site since the year 1986.
Southeast False Creek was the place of the Vancouver Olympic Village during the 2010 Paralympics and Olympic Winter Games. This location was constructed on the last remaining big tract of waterfront land that was undeveloped close to downtown Vancouver.
Southeast False Creek has become a home for up to 16,000 individuals since the 2010 Winter Games. It is home to a 45,000 square foot community centre. The future developments consist of an elementary school, a public plaza, a community garden and different child care centres among other things.
